The land of the Lycians
This coast was the heartland of ancient Lycia, whose people carved monumental tombs into the cliffs. In Fethiye, the Tomb of Amyntas, cut into the rock face in the fourth century BC, looks down over the modern town.
Where mountains meet the blue
Fethiye lies on Türkiye's south-western coast, where the Taurus Mountains plunge into a sea scattered with islands. A working harbour town built on the site of ancient Telmessos, it is the gateway to Ölüdeniz, Butterfly Valley and the Lycian Way.
The city
This coast was the heartland of ancient Lycia, whose people carved monumental tombs into the cliffs. In Fethiye, the Tomb of Amyntas, cut into the rock face in the fourth century BC, looks down over the modern town.
Fethiye has kept the feel of a real town rather than a resort. Its marina and fish market are busy, its old quarter of Paspatur is lively in the evenings, and boats leave each morning to explore the islands of the gulf.
The surroundings are remarkable: the lagoon at Ölüdeniz, the summit of Babadağ, the gorge at Saklıkent and the abandoned stone village of Kayaköy.
In Fethiye, every road seems to end at a view of turquoise water.
At the fish market you can choose your fish and have it cooked at a neighbouring restaurant. Village dishes such as gözleme and fresh herbs are a staple. Summers are hot, winters mild and green; spring and autumn are perfect for walking and exploring.
Dalaman Airport is about an hour away. Fethiye has hospitals for everyday needs, but specialised treatment is generally carried out in larger cities, and many visitors come here for the calm afterwards.

The character of the city
Fethiye is defined by the meeting of rock and water: steep pine-covered slopes falling into sheltered bays, islands floating on a glassy sea.
It is a place for mornings on the water and evenings on the harbour, with ancient tombs watching from the cliffs above.
“At the edge of turquoise dreams, the mountains keep the secrets of the sea.”
