The Aegean at its most refined

Bodrum

Bodrum sits at the tip of a peninsula in south-western Türkiye, where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean. Once the ancient city of Halicarnassus, it is now known for its crusader castle, white houses, lively marina and the quiet bays scattered along its coast.

Getting to know Bodrum

Ancient Halicarnassus

Bodrum was the birthplace of Herodotus, often called the father of history, and the site of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Little of the monument survives, but the ancient theatre and city gates still recall the classical city.

A castle and a harbour

In the early fifteenth century the Knights of St John built a great castle on the peninsula between Bodrum's two bays, reusing stone from the ancient Mausoleum. Today it houses a museum of underwater archaeology, while the harbour around it fills with traditional wooden gulets.

Bodrum makes even an ordinary evening feel like the end of a long, good story.

Peninsula life

The Bodrum peninsula is a collection of distinct villages: lively Gümbet and Turgutreis, elegant Yalıkavak and Türkbükü, artistic Gümüşlük. Whitewashed cube houses with blue shutters, bougainvillea and olive groves define the landscape.

Fresh fish, Aegean herbs, mandarins and olive-oil dishes fill local tables. Summers are hot and busy, especially in July and August; late spring and early autumn are calmer, with warm seas and softer light.

Practical notes

Milas–Bodrum Airport serves the peninsula. Bodrum is primarily a place for rest; for specialised medical care, most visitors are treated in larger cities and choose Bodrum for a peaceful stay before returning home.

Bodrum

The character of the city

The Aegean at its most refined

Bodrum blends easygoing seaside life with a polished, cosmopolitan edge: fishermen mending nets beside superyachts, village cafés a short drive from design hotels.

Above all it is a place of light — whitewashed walls, bright water and long sunsets over the islands.

“Whitewashed streets, restless blue waters, and sunsets that make leaving feel impossible.”
